Carving Out Our Futures- Red Ribbon Week Door Decoration

We needed a simple quick idea for our Red Ribbon Week Door Decorations.  We went with the theme "Carving Out Our Futures". I gave each student a half sheet of orange construction paper and had them tear out a pumpkin shape. You should have seen their eyes go wide when I said no sketching and no scissors!

I modeled for them how to make small tears and to tear slowly. What's so great about paper tearing is that you truly end up with a pumpkin patch full of very unique pumpkins. We added faces with crayons that made our jack-o-lanterns really come to life!

My teaching partner came up with the idea to add a pumpkin leaf. We had our students write about the good choices they can make to "carve out" their futures on their leaf. For a finishing touch we curled vines around our pencils to give our door a little bit of dimension!

We were really happy with how we were able to combine Red Ribbon Week with a little bit of Halloween fun!
